Robbie Maddison Surfs Tahiti Waves On His Dirt Bike

In a partnership with DC, motorbike stunt rider Robbie Maddison nailed his most-daring project yet - to surf Tahiti waves on his dirt bike.

Grind TV released a video of "Maddo" geared to take the 25-feet waves crashing down at Tahiti's monster surf. This is the conclusion to the project stunt called, "Robbie Maddison's Pipe Dream," a two-year partnership with DC that allowed him to let his imagination run wild.

"I don't want to take away from any of my other stunts, as they all gave me a different thrill factor, but Pipe Dream is by far the most ambitious project I have pulled off," the 34-year-old rider told Grind TV. "The thrill was more scary than rewarding. There are moments when you know you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that's the closest I had ever been to that."

This idea came out when the motocross champ decided to combine his three favorite things: dirt biking, surfing, and stand-up jet-skiing.

"Riding the wave was the most challenging terrain I've ever taken a motorcycle on," he shared. "Every time there was a mechanical change in the bike, it changed the way it rode."

Born in Kiama, Australia, Maddison shared he growing up as a surfer was a major help. "Growing up surfing gave me the insight and knowledge on how to read waves, as well as the ability to be comfortable in the ocean," he added. "But I'm just happy to survive that. The whole crew thought I was a goner. I'm just glad I'm still here."

TRANSWORLD MOTO editor-in-chief Donn Maeda and a friend of Maddison's told Grind TV that although the first few attempts were disastrous, the extreme sports superstar never even thought of backing out. "I've been good friends with Robbie for many years, and his courage and creativity never ceases to amaze me," said Maeda. "This was, by far, the craziest thing I've seen him do."
