Bulgaria To Propose Junk Food Tax

Bulgaria is looking like it is on to something good for its people now that it is raising its tax on junk food from 3 to 80 percent as per the country's health and sports ministers' announcement. According to Novinite.com, anything that contains high levels of sugar, salt, caffeine and vegetable oil will be subjected to this tax law.

As of the moment, this law has not been implemented yet but during a press conference, two of the ministers of health and sports explained further about this possible change and if this is finally implemented and the Parliament actually agrees, they are warning the public that the cost of junk food will definitely become higher.

People might wonder where would the money from the junk food tax go should this be approved, according to reports, 20% of these will go to renovate or build new facilities for sports while the other 20% would be spent to create healther meals in schools. The remaining will go to treatment and research in curing diseases that was caused by consuming junk foods.

Bulgaria's Health Minister had already proposed this idea back in September. Moskov said that this movement will make the public more conscious about their health and their locals would definitely subside in eating and promoting junk foods.

Taxing these products would depend on the ingredients containing the food and this would probably raise the price of bread and other products of its kind up to 44%, while faux dairy products will go up to 78% than their usual regular prices.

The usual basic food like the real pastries, dairies, fruits and vegetables will be exempted from this kind of tax. This is a great idea for people to become more aware of what they eat.
