#PutOutYourBats - This is a hashtag you've probably seen today. If you haven't, that's rare. It's part of a tribute from cricket players and fans to the recently passed Phillip Hughes.
Hughes passed away in a Sydney Hospital on Thursday. He suffered a head injury after a ball delivered by Sean Abbott struck him in the back of the head. He was playing first-class cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground two days before, on Tuesday, the Daily Mail noted.
He was surrounded by loved ones, family and friends. Although, the most surprising thing of all is that this wasn't the end for Hughes. A lot of people in the world had and still have a big surprise for him.
A trend started with an IT worker, Paul Taylor, who put out a cricket bat and a cap next to the front door of his home and tweeted, #putoutyourbats. After this, a lot of people followed.
"We've all played cricket in one way or another. Backyard or beach cricket, no matter what level, we've all grown up with a bat and a ball," said Taylor and ABC News noted.
The most touching detail is that all the people involved in Hughes life added the bat and the cap on their front doors, or in the field. They took a picture of it and posted it on Twitter to pay their respects.
At the Sydney Cricket Ground, outside the state school in the northern South Wales town of Macksville, where Hughes was born; at St. Patrick's, where Hughes attended primary school.
Every single place of interest, basically, remembered him fondly. #Putoutyourbats is a faithful representation of the gesture and the memory.
Hughes was only 25 years old and although he was gone too soon, he'll be remembered. Even Google Australia created a small bat in their homepage.
Also, there was a map designed showing how people are currently talking about Hughes and #putoutyourbats hashtag. There are small lights every time any of those is mentioned. It's lovely to see that the stars are always on.
