Alcohol Consumption: One Person Dies Every 10 Second Due To Alcohol Consumption, Report

Hazardous alcohol consumption is credited to more or less 88,000 deaths in the United States for 2006 to 2010 records according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  In a larger proportion, the World Health Organization reported 3.3 million deaths worldwide in 2012 due to alcohol consumption.

Severe alcohol consumption shortens the lives of the people who drink excessively by 30 years.  Drinking alcohol extremely not only lead to addiction but is also credited for various diseases and disorders including heart disease, pneumonia and tuberculosis.

"This actually translates into one death every 10 seconds," Shekhar Saxena told reporters in Geneva, head of the WHO's Mental Health and Substance Abuse department.

In the 2012 WHO report, it caused deaths of 3.3 million which when translated is equivalent to 5.9 percent of worldwide deaths where there are 4.0 percent deaths of women and 7.6. percent deaths of men, Global Post reported.

It was also found out that in an average, people 15 years and above drinks about 6.2 liters of pure alcohol every year. Men were also found to be more addictive to alcohol and most likely to die than women due to overconsumption of alcohol.

However, women drinking are also increasing and are more at risk when it comes to health and social problems.

Over time, alcohol consumption can lead to 200 chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, stroke, and digestive problems. Other serious illness includes cancer, cirrhosis and people drinking are more prone to infectious diseases such as pneumonia, HIV, and tuberculosis.

According to WHO, alcohol consumption is getting more alarming with binge drinking.  Binge drinking is defined as drinking 4 or more in a single event for women and for men drinking 5 or more in a single event.

Europe is reported to have the highest alcohol consumption per capita while the United States and Africa have recorded constant result for years. However, Southeast Asia and Western Pacific regions alcohol consumption have shown increasing trend, which post greater alarm.

Although western countries that have greater capacity have higher trending record when it comes to severe alcohol consumption, countries such as China and India displayed increasing alcohol consumption as people earn more money.
