An experienced 73-year-old BASE jumper dies, Twin Falls Idaho after his parachute failed to deploy on time as he jumped off from the Perrine Bridge into the Snake River, 500 feet below on May 7.

James E. Hickey of Claremont, California, a qualified BASE jumper attempted to perform a stunt by jumping from the Perrine Bridge while another BASE jumper followed him and set a parachute on fire. However Hickey was swallowed up in fire as his chute failed to deploy on time, the USA Today reports.

"It's my understanding that he was performing a stunt," Capt. Brent Hilliard of the Twin Falls County Sheriff's Office said, according to Magic Valley.

BASE jumping is now on heightened controversy after the latest BASE jumper professional Dean Potter and his partner, Graham Hunt died on the recent wingsuit flight at the Yosemite National Park. A total of five BASE jumpers had reportedly died since January of this year.
