Official Title and Poster for 'Independence Day' Sequel Announced [PHOTOS+VIDEO]

It has been a long wait, but the sequel to 'Independence Day' will finally be made. 20th Century Fox has just announced the official title through a short video.

'Independence Day 2' will officially be called 'Independence Day: Resurgence.' The film's poster has also been released together with the video.

The film's synopsis reads as follows:

"Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

 

Several pictures have surfaced on the set of the film, including a group selfie featuring the entire cast.

Screenwriter and producer Dean Devlin has also posted a picture on Twitter with the caption, "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the set of #IndependenceDay Resurgence!"

'Independence Day: Resurgence' is directed by Roland Emmerich. It marks the return of Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner and Vivica A. Fox. The new cast members include Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher and Maika Monroe.

The film will also feature a new female president. Sela Ward will join the cast as US President Langford.

The first 'Independence Day' film was released on July 3, 1996 and catapulted Will Smith into superstardom. The actor has originally been asked to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller. However, Fox has refused to pay Smith's $50 million talent fee and the project will be completed without the actor.

'Independence Day: Resurgence' is scheduled for release on June 24, 2016.
