What's The Verdict on Destiny: The Taken King?

It's been a rocky year for Destiny since it launched last September. The much hyped game sputtered out at launch garnering mixed reviews for its lack of content and repetitive gameplay. It didn't help when rumors started swirling that the sci-fi shoot'em and loot'em cost a staggering $500 million to make and market (a claim strongly denied by publisher Activision).

In the year since, developer Bungie has poured countless resources into updating Destiny, adding new content in the form of free and paid updates like the House of Wolves and Dark Below expansion packs. This week, saw the biggest changes yet thanks to the release of the latest add-on, entitled The Taken King.

Many fans have criticized Activision and Bungie for the expansion's pricing, at $40 its twice the price of the first two packs. Speaking with IGN back in August, community manager Eric Osborne tried justifying the reasoning behind the steep price tag:

"You've got a full campaign, [and] I think people are going to enjoy the cinematics, the characters, the missions. We're taking you to the Dreadnaught, to Phobos, up into colony ships. Nathan Fillion is talking to you, Lance Reddick is talking to you, it's good stuff."

Regardless of whether you choose to buy The Taken King or not, all players will have access to the new 2.0 update which radically overhauls many of Destiny's core systems.

Is all this change worth it?

Gametrailers gave The Taken King an 87/100 saying:

It's evident Bungie has been listening to fan feedback this last year and has worked hard to reinvent Destiny. The story is presented better than ever, the new subclasses offer different playstyles and draw players together, and the grind is alleviated thanks to a plethora of post-game missions and the Dreadnaught patrol zone.

Cheat Code Central rated it a 4.5 out of 5 calling it the game Destiny should have been from the beginning.
