Leah Remini Scientology: Actress Leaves Church After Being Subjected to 'Thought Modification'?

Actress Leah Remini is leaving the Church of Scientology.

The "Kings and Queens" actress issued a statement to the press, expressing her gratitude to the media, but not her decision for leaving.

"I wish to share my sincere and heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming positive response I have received from the media, my colleagues, and fans from around the world. I am truly grateful and thankful for all your support," Remini said.

The New York Post, was the first to report the story.

Sources told the Post that although the 42-year-old actress did not directly confirm her departure, she has indeed left the church. According to the Post, Remini left the church after "being subjected to years of 'interrogations' and 'thought modification' for questioning leader David Miscavige's rules.

In an April 2001 interview with CNN, Remini said she "finds solace in her steadfast practice of Scientology." She jumped to defend her religion.

"If somebody is going to get turned off about something because of what they read or heard, then that person's not smart enough to even enter a church," Remini said to CNN.

According to Reuters, the church described it practices as a religion and believes man is an immortal being who's experience extend beyond on life time.

"Leah remains convinced of the value of L. Ron Hubbard's work, but will no longer tolerate the squirreling and human rights abuses perpetrated in the church," former Scientology Mike Rinder wrote, according to the Huffington Post. "Nor will she allow anyone to tell her who she can and cannot talk to or associate with. As a result, the church has lost one of it's most effective supporters, both in the public relations arena and their banks balances."

The church was formed in 1954 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. The church also carries a heavy celebrity following, with celebrities such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
