It's never too late for love.
After more than four decades together, Lily Tomlin and partner Jane Wagner may finally tie the knot.
"Jane and I have been together for 42 years," Tomlin said at The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Pre-Emmy Performers Peer Group reception, according to E! News. "We're thinking maybe we'll get married."
Tomlin said she never thought they would see same sex marriage legal in their lifetime.
"You didn't think that would happen," the actress said. "It's pretty remarkable."
The couple met in 1971 when the actress approached Wagner, 78, about a collaboration for her comedy album. According to the New York Daily News, Tomlin previously recognized Wagner's work as a writer after seeing an after-school special she wrote.
"Frankly, I was pretty taken with her as soon as I saw her," Tomlin told Metro Weekly in 2006. "We just sort of clicked. We became a couple right away."
After the Supreme Court's rulings on DOMA and Prop 8, the ladies can see themselves saying "I do," but according to the New York Daily News, there would not be anything traditional about their ceremony.
"No rings, no bridal dresses," Tomlin said. "Maybe we'll be dressed like chickens."
But the actress also noted that although they can get married if they choose to, they have been exceptionally happy together over the years.
"You don't really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice," she told E! News. "Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very, very happy about it."
Tomlin co-starred in "Moment by Moment" and "The Incredible Shrinking Woman," which she also directed, as well as several Emmy Award-winning comedy specials
"I know what a good heart she has, and how empathetic she is with all kinds of people and issues," Tomlin said. "She's so brilliant on top of it that she can voice these things. And she's as funny as she can possibly be. She makes me laugh."
