Instagram finally responded to the #FreetheNipple movement by saying that Apple is the reason why there were no women nude pics allowed in the said photo app.
For a long time, Instagram is not allowing women to show their nude pics to the public. As a result, a movement called #FreetheNipple camapign was formed. According to the activists, the freedom of women to express themselves through nude images is being banned while men were all given the authority to expose their topless bodies.
During an event at London which was hosted by Dazed Media, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom finally answered the reason why Instagram is not allowing the nudity of women.
As what Business Insider reported, Systrom stated that the reason behind the said prohibition is the multi tech company Apple. It can be remembered that Cupertino-based company forbid all the apps with a rating of 17+ to display nude images in the Apple Store. This means that if Instagram insists, they will be accused for violating of rules which will lead to their elimination in the Apple Store.
"In order to scale effectively, there are [some] tough calls," added by Systrom.
The official community guidelines of Instagram state that the company is aware that some of the users may want to display nude pictures which are considered artistic and creative. However for some reasons, the online photo-sharing site is not allowing nudity in general.
The prohibited photos include content that displays sexual intercourse, genitals and closed-up of fully-nude buttocks which also include images of women's nipples.
On the other hand, images of a women that is breastfeeding and a picture of post-mastectomy scarring is allowable. Nude paintings and sculpture is also acceptable in the social networking site.
Some of the popular individuals who posted nude photos that have been censored include Miley Cyrus, Chrissy Teigen and Chelsea Handler.
The #FreeTheNipple movement which was founded by filmmaker Lina Esco started in the year 2014.
