One of the greatest comic books of all-time is getting its own TV series. The Hollywood Reporter has just broken the news that a Y: The Last Man show is currently in development at FX.
Created by writer Brian K. Vaughn and artist Pia Guerra and published under Vertigo; Y: The Last Man tells the story of Yorick Brown - the last surviving man on earth. Joined only by his pet Capuchin monkey Ampersand and an ever changing group of unforgettable characters; Brown sets off on an epic journey to find his missing girlfriend and uncover the truth behind the mysterious virus that wiped out every living being with a Y chromosome.
The series ran for 60 issues and bagged 3 Eisner Awards - the comic book industry's highest honor.
THR says that the network is working together with Color Force's Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson to bring the story to life. The team is now looking for writers to help develop the series with Vaughn.
The move to FX ends a decade long saga of attempted film adaptations. For the longest time, New Line Cinema had been trying to get a movie version of the ground. However, last year marked the end of their hold on the property rights. With no film on the horizon, control of the story reverted back to Vaughn and Guerra.
A serialized television show always seemed like a better fit for such an expansive narrative, and it may finally be happening.
Vaughn is no stranger to the TV industry having served as writer and producer on big name TV shows like Lost and Under the Dome. He currently has three ongoing books; all of which are published by Image comics - Saga, We Stand on Guard, and Paper Girls.
