Growth of Pakistan's Nuclear Technology

Pakistan's arsenal is on the rise with the country's estimated warheads now at 120. Soon it could rank third in the world's nuclear power. United States and Russia take the top spots while China, France, and Britain come behind Pakistan in the rank. Recently, its armory has become more fatal. Small tactical nuclear can struck India and longer-range armory can even reach farther.

Pakistan is also a home of some extremist groups that are said to be obsessed with India. World powers should convince Pakistan to restrain its nuclear weapons program. Both Pakistan and India have not considered taking limits of doing so.

According to NYTimes, the Obama administration approached this complex issue with urgency and imagination, knowing that success is small. President Obama and Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif conducted a meeting at the White House on October 22, but nothing was agreed upon. It is best to keep on convincing Pakistan and India, or either of them, because of their increasing tensions.

The US administration is planning to have a deal with Pakistan, with both parties having something they want. In this deal, US would get to restrain Pakistan and have them to comply with international rules to stop nuclear technology. For Pakistan, they would be get to be accepted in the group of nuclear powers and have access to technology.

One American official shared that Pakistan should cease going after tactical nuclear arsenal. This would likely be utilized for causing conflict in India, and could be used by terrorists. Pakistan should also sign the treaty prohibiting testing of nuclear weapons.

These actions should be part of Pakistan's long term interest. The country spends 25% of its budget on defense while it adequately provides for its citizens. Pakistan's chief of staff said however that they still need more nuclear weapon to counteract India's.

The unsettling competition against India will lead to no good and both countries would be in a losing game.
