Chris Martin recently revealed that he was feeling "depressed and overwhelmed" a few years ago as his 10-year marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow was coming to an end.
Inevitably, his mental state affected how he felt about his music, making him feel insecure: "I wasn't looking at things in a healthy way."
Thankfully, a friend helped him get through the tough times by giving him some books, two of them being "Man's Search for Meaning," a memoir by psychiatrist Viktor Frankl, and a volume by Persian poet Rumi.
According to Chris Martin, Rumi's poem, "The Guest House," was what helped him get through the dark times following his divorce. He explains:
"It kind of changed my life. [...] It says that everything that happens to you is OK. The idea is to accept what happens to you and not run away from anything - and trust that things will blossom and become colorful."
Taking inspiration from the poem, Rolling Stone reports that the poem is featured "in a psychedelic spoken-word section" in Coldplay's upcoming album "A Head Full of Dreams," which is slated for a December 4 release.
Chris Martin reveals that "A Head Full of Dreams" is about his journey of recovery from anxiety and heartbreak:
"It's all true [...] It's about love and acceptance and embracing what happens to you. It's quite a hippie album. All of our records were a journey to get to this one."
It seems as though the upcoming album was the most difficult one to make. The producers were demanding and encouraged the band to recruit other artists - which also makes this album probably their best yet.
Noel Gallagher plays the guitar on "Up & Up," while Beyonce guests on two tracks, including "Hymn for the Weekend." Not only that, but even Jay Z's daughter Blue Ivy Carter got "backing-vocal credit."
Probably the most surprising recruit is Gwyneth Paltrow. Yes, you read that right: she sings back up vocals on "Everglow." Tove Lo and Chris Martin's girlfriend Annabelle Wallis are also reportedly featured in Coldplay's seventh album.
