Think It's All About the Smoke? Experts Say Smokeless Tobacco is Just as Harmful

Smoking has been known to be the number 1 cause of lung cancer, and since then, many people have resulted to using e-cigarette, while others made the bold move to quit smoking and just use those stuff that help people with the withdrawal symptoms.

But a recent study of the U.S. government, people who use smokeless tobacco are equally if not highly exposed to nicotine and NNK which is a cancer-causing chemical in tobacco products than cigarette smokers. Toxic components of smokeless tobacco and the health of people who use them should be researched more said the researchers from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Frank Leone, who is director of the University of Pennsylvania's Comprehensive Smoking Treatment Program in Philadelphia, explained that it is not normal for people to use smokeless tobacco as a cigarette replacement in an attempt to wean themselves off of smoking. He added saying there are other ways much safer than these smokeless tobacco to substitute the sources of nicotine.

Patches, gum and inhalers are all types of alternative nicotine sources, said Dr. Leone, who was not involved with the new study.

He also told Reuters Health that there are nothing you can really call safe, especially if it involves tobacco. Even different kinds of tobacco that others may find theoretically safe because of the way it is delivered may still depend on other details, like how often the user uses it, how much is introduced in the body and how long is it being used.

According to the researchers who wrote in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, smokeless tobacco like chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, snus, and dissolvable tobacco was revealed to be used by at least 7% of U.S. male adults between the years 2012 and 2013.
