‘In the Heart of the Sea’ Movie Taking a Dive at the Box Office

The American biographical adventure thriller film "In the Heart of the Sea"  is on track to be one of the biggest flops in the career of the film director, producer, and actor - Ron Howard. The movie will serve as an aching remark to what has been a devastating year for the studio behind the motion picture - Warner Bros.

The film about the New England vessel Essex, a whaleship that had a nasty encounter with a sperm whale - which inspires the "Moby Dick" of Herman Melville, is estimated to garner between $12 million and $14 million when the film will be shown across 3,103 theaters - but, that's a disastrous number for a drama movie that lifts a production budget that hovers around $100 million.

The motion picture debuted overseas last weekend, and gained a middle-of-the-road, $18.5 million from 38 markets.

"In the Heart of the Sea's" poor showing comes as the American entertainment company - Warner Bros., once regarded to be the most formidable film studio in Hollywood, is reeling from a series of costly flops such as the American-Australian space opera film - "Jupiter Ascending" and director Joe Wright's 3D fantasy adventure family film - "Pan."

However, Warner Bros. has one more movie left to open, director Ericson Core's action thriller - "Point Break" that debuts on December 25, and the film studio can take solace in the performance of the American sports drama film "Creed," which earned a strong $65.8 million since debuting over Thanksgiving.

The film studio Warner Bros. did not suffer the flop alone, as the "In the Heart of the Sea" film was co-produced and co-financed by the Australian media company - Village Roadshow and originally slated to unleash the movie last spring before shifting the dates.

Chris Hemsworth, who suffered another massive movie flop earlier this year with Michael Mann's action thriller mystery film "Blackhat" and the Australian actor who is famous for his character as Kim Hyde in the Australian TV series Home and Away, has been unable to prove he can open a movie outside the American superhero film - "Thor."
