Mozilla has just announced that they will now exterminate their Firefox OS smartphone initiative. The said decision was made due to the fact that the said OS did not succeed in the Android-saturated marketplace.
In the Mozlando developer event in Orlando Florida, the free-software community has revealed that they will now shutdown their Firefox OS for smartphone. Mozilla stated that they will explore the possibility of creating a Firefox OS for other platforms like Internet of Things products instead.
In a statement, Ari Jaaksi explained one of the main reason why Mozilla will now kill the Firefox OS.
"Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs.Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs," stated by the senior vice president of connected devices of Mozilla.
The sudden decision of Mozilla to shut down their smartphone OS displays the reality in the Android market. Right now, the iOs of Apple and the Android of Google are the ones who are dominating the market in terms of OS and smartphone sales.
It can be remembered that the main objective of the Firefox OS is to enable OEMs to create cheap handsets for developing markets. At a certain point, there was a time that the said OS was pushed for a $25 smartphone which was later stopped because of its infeasibility.
It can be also recalled that the Firefox OS was first announced in July 2011 to the development community. At first, the platform had attracted some of the big technology manufacturers like LG, ZTE, Alcatel and Huawei. However, due to excessive demand on the market, the company was not able to continue its investment.
On the other hand, the Firefox browser was once the most popular platform for accessing to the World Wide Web. In the year 2011, the said browser was dethroned by Google Chrome.
