Eight-Year-Old Boy Sets up Food Bank After Watching Documentary

Get your tissues out, because this is going to be a touching one.

Eight year old Ronnie Hazlie got so upset after watching a documentary about food banks that he immediately decided he wanted to help. With the help of his mother, Katy Jane, he set up a Facebook event, and so far, he has collected an amazing 519 cans for his local Gosport and Fareham food bank.

Katy Jane, 37, from Albert Street in the UK, said in an interview: "Ronnie saw a documentary about food banks and he couldn't believe that people don't have food."

"Since then he has been nagging me and everyone he knows to donate tins," she continues.

The young man even went as far as asking for tin cans for his birthday, instead of the usual presents. His mom, a book assistant, said: "For his birthday he said he didn't want any presents, he just wanted tins."

Ronnie also said he did not expect to collect such a significant number of tin cans, but nevertheless, he was glad to help others. "I wanted to help other children after I watched a television programme about food banks," he said. "We have 519 tins which we are going to give to other people who need them."

Called "Donate a Tin for the Ronster", the Facebook event has garnered a wave of donations from all over the UK.

If people were too far from his location, the sponsors sent money directly to Ronnie so he can buy tin cans to add to the food bank. Many businesses also extend assistance by setting up drop-off points where people can donate tins.

The manager at The Vine pub, Penny Woodhouse, said in an interview that regular customers and strangers alike have chimed in to help the cause. She added, "Ronnie is such a lovely little helpful lad. He's massively enthusiastic about what he does, from collecting food for the hungry to helping us clean up at the end of the day."
