In a bizarre turn of events, two cargo planes stocked with arrived at the UK laden with biscuits, easing the biscuit shortage hounding the country since early this year.
The two Boeing 777 aircraft landed at the Doncaster Sheffield airport this week. This move is in response to the shortage which was caused by the flooding in Cumbria. The disaster caused flooding in the United Biscuits factory based in the area. Note that the company manufactures products under McVitie's, Crawford's, and Jacob's.
The two cargo planes arrived from the United Arab Emirates, and was welcomed by Dayle Hauxwell, cargo manager of the said airport.
"There has been a lot of press coverage about Britain's biscuit shortage following the floods in December and we are pleased to hear that the factories hope to be up and running again this month," Hauxwell told the Doncaster Free Press."In the mean time we've been delighted to welcome two flights from Emirates full of the nation's favorite biscuits."
However, the national biscuit shortage is not slated to last long. Fortunately for British biscuit-lovers, United Biscuits released in a statement last March 4th that the Carlisle factory is well on its way to start full production, easing fears that the whole fiasco would carry on for months.
"The flooding in northern England at the end of last year was devastating for thousands of people and businesses in the area, and the impact was felt across the UK," said Mark Heaney, factory manager of United Biscuits. "Since the floods we have seen extensive coverage in the media around the 'biscuit shortage' with consumers wanting our products back on shelves as quickly as possible. This encouragement from our loyal biscuit fans has kept our teams going and we thank everyone for their support. We also appreciate the collaboration from our retail and trade customers.
He also thanked the community for helping push through.
"It's been awful not to be baking biscuits, so we thank everyone that has helped us along the way to get production back up and running. We're extremely proud of how employees have come together to support the wider local community raising necessary funds and providing biscuits."
