According to the Mayo Clinic, panic attacks frequently take place all of a sudden. They can be accompanied by a wide range of symptoms, including shaking, pain in the chest, sweat, and a racing heartbeat. Mental health counselor Catherine Del Toro stated that consuming something sour or spicy might make you feel more grounded and bring you into the present moment, which can finally slow down or even stop the panic attack.

Del Toro explains that despite its delicious taste, sour candy is not a cure for anxiety or panic attacks; instead, it is a therapy that can assist ease symptoms in the present time.

As mentioned, there is undeniably truth and science to the idea that eating sour or hot candies can help alleviate anxiety and panic attacks. Del Toro also said this is a typical 'therapy hack' since sour candy is more accessible to transport than other types of candy. In her workplace, she even maintains a jar of warheads.

Moreover, Stephanie Sarkis, a psychotherapist, explains that taking sour candy is not the only diversion that might help prevent panic attacks from occurring. She suggests that practicing mindfulness through activities such as deep breathing, creating, yoga, touching your thumb to each finger, and recognizing three things you can see, feel, and hear are beneficial.

Nevertheless, the psychotherapist observes that diversions lose their effectiveness as you become more accustomed to them, which is why it is beneficial to switch them up.

Possible Adverse Effects of Sour Candy Consumption for Anxiety

Consuming sour candy daily has several severe downsides, one of which is the development of a dysfunctional coping mechanism. If you use this method frequently and drink a lot of sweets, you can consume a significant quantity of added sugars, which might discourage you from following other health goals you have set for yourself.

Additionally, sour candy, a high-glycemic snack, can produce a significant increase and decrease in blood sugar levels. In the end, this 'solution' to worry could cause symptoms that are similar to those of anxiety. It is because bodily feelings such as shakiness, anger, and high heart rate are common characteristics of low blood sugar.

Furthermore, according to Dr. Roberson-Moore, another chemical response should also be considered. There is a correlation between excessive sugar consumption and a reduction in the quantity of a brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) protein. Anxiety and panic attacks can be alleviated with the help of BDNF. Consequently, a lack of BDNF can ultimately make anxiety worse throughout a more extended period.

On the other hand, other coping techniques are not only more nutrient-conscious but also probably more effective in lowering anxiety. It has been demonstrated via research that cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based meditation, and physical activity are all effective methods for treating anxiety problems and even conquering them.
