Nobody doubts that the woman behind cult HBO show "Girls" is one of the most iconic feminists in recent times, and the recent Lena Dunham speech at the "Power of Women" event by Variety proves, once again, that the award-winning actress and writer has a lot to say.
Over the past few months, there has been a world of controversy surrounding the star, after her most recent book saw her publishing a story about her little sister of what many considered sexual abuse to a child; but now, months later, Lena Dunham's speech puts all the wrong behind her as she takes on a serious subject from her own experience.
According to The Daily Mail, the recent Lena Dunham speech was met with applause by some of the most important women in the entertainment industry last Friday in New York City, as she spoke about her experience of campus rape when she was in college.
Last week, Dunham, who recently appeared on ABC's Scandal, was one of the honorees at the prestigious Variety luncheon "Power of Women," and she went on stage to give an empowering speech directed at victims of rape.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Lena Dunham's speech dealt with something she has spoken publicly about in the past: having been raped during college. She spoke at length about the experience in "Not That Kind Of Girl," her controversial book of autobiographical essays.
However, Lena Dunham's speech marks a rare occasion: the actress, director and writer speaking in front of an audience about how things went down in her life after this terrible experience.
"When I was raped, I felt powerless. I felt my value had been determined by someone else, someone who sent me the message that my body was not my own and my choices were meaningless," said Dunham, according to People Magazine. "As a feminist and as a sexual assault survivor, my ultimate goal is to use my experience, my platform, and yes, my privilege, to reverse stigma and give voice to other survivors."
