How to Avoid Gaining Weight Over the Holidays

Most Americans gain only 1 pound over the holidays but the bad news is what we do gain, we keep. During the winter holiday season, there are more parties, more potlucks, more gifts, more cookies and more of everything and these temptations won't be going away any time soon. So you’ll need a little bit of will power and commitment. Here are 10 simple ways to get through holiday seasons without gaining weight.

1. Drink a lot of water

Keep a cup of water in hand at parties and sip water between bites, so that you can meet your daily quota to help prevent overeating. Also get hold of a bottle of water and refill it at least three times a day so that you can drink enough water.

2. Hold back on the carbohydrates

Maintaining a high-protein diet is an excellent way to lose weight. If you take a low-fat protein meal supplement before large meals, you won’t want to eat as much but you'll still have lots of energy.

3. Make fitness a priority

People who exercise first thing in the morning are more likely to exercise regularly than those who exercise later in the day. Don't let your workouts go by the wayside. When you exercise first, you're less likely to overindulge with food later.

4. Limit alcohol
Alcohol is pretty high in calories and it makes you overindulge and lose self-control. If you must drink, limit the number of servings. Instead of tying yourself down with a glass of wine or a cocktail, use one hand solely for a glass of water.

5. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep can be just as important to a successful diet as healthful eating and exercise. There is robust evidence that reduced sleep contributes to obesity.
