67 New Emojis May Be Coming To Your Phone Next Year

If the recent additions of the Taco and Hot Dog weren't enough to sate your emoji cravings; you're in luck, because the Unicode Consortium has just unveiled a list of 67 new candidates that may be on your mobile phone in the near future.

Buzzfeed was the first to get the scoop on the new graphics. The food category is well represented with a number of dishes from various cuisines making the short list. These include a whole pan of Paella, a Bowl of Tomato-Mushroom Salad, and a Shawarma looking stuffed flatbread dish.

French food was also well represented in this update with a croissant, baguette, and champagne flute all getting rendered emoji style.

However, the biggest shoo-in for selection is without a doubt the bacon strips. It's hard to believe that the Internet's favorite protein still doesn't have an official emoji.

The full food and beverage list includes:

  •  Croissant
  •  Avocado
  •  Cucumber
  •  Bacon
  •  Potato
  •  Carrot
  •  Baguette bread
  •  Green salad
  •  Shallow pan of food (paella)
  •  Stuffed flatbread (kebab)
  •  Clinking glasses
  •  Tumbler glass (whisky)
  •  Spoon

Aside from food, a host of sporting themed emoji were the most prominent sub category. Expect the fencer, water polo player, and gymnast to be in heavy rotation once the Olympic Games begin next year.

This list will no doubt be thinned in the coming months, and it's possible that none of these may come to your phone at all. To see which of these make the cut, you'll have to wait until July 2016 when the new Unicode 9.0 update releases.
