Inmates in Maricopa County Served 56-Cent Thanksgiving Meal

A jailhouse Sheriff turned an average Thanksgiving dinner into a economical meal for the roughly 7,500 to 10,000 inmates.

According to the Huffington Post, Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, offered meals for 56 cents per inmate. The main course included a vegetarian turkey soy casserole for 24-cent. The average meal costs between 15 and 40 cents, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office website.

"Hope the inmates give thanks for this special meal being served in the jails tomorrow," Arpaio's tweeted on Wednesday.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's website featured a biography of Arpaio accomplishments including how he provides inmates with the "cheapest meals in the U.S." Inmates are fed twice a day, in order to cut down coat of meal delivery.

According to the biography, Arpaio has also decided to stop serving inmates salt and pepper in order to save taxpayer money.

ABC15 reported Arpaio started serving vegetarian diet meals in order to save $100,000 on food costs. In March, Arpaio announced that he would begin charging inmate $1 for their meals.

Last Thanksgiving, Arpaio complained the cost of a meal, which cost 65 cent, was an "astronomical increase" from previous meals.

In a press release, Arpaio announced a bread and water diet for 30 days as a form of punishment for reportedly performing unsuitable act.

"Any defacement or vandalism of the flags by inmates comes with the penalty of bread and water. Ten inmates are currently on bread and water for this infraction," Arpaio said in the press release.
