Why Sam Mendes Agrees To Direct 'Spectre' A Bond Film After Saying No

Sam Mendes is a critically acclaimed film director who is responsible for incredible films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which starred Johnny Depp. But here's something about him that probably not a lot of people know and it is the fact that he didn't really like the idea of directing a James Bond themed movie. But after being persuaded by producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, Mendes finally agreed to do it.

The Hollywood Reporter got a hold of the "Spectre" film director and when he was asked how he finally said yes to the project, he answered saying, "They wooed me the first time and were very clear that they wanted me, but I had to find my own way back into it. I felt like I didn't know where to go narratively after the last one. These things take a lot out of you, and I went immediately into a huge theater project, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. So I didn't feel I had any head space to try to work out how to crack it again, and they wanted an answer straightaway."

As for the new Bond movie, Variety said that the director is bringing more mature Bond girls. Mendes even sighted Monica Bellucci as an example and why she deserves the role despite being 51 years old. Apparently, he saw something in her at 5am when they were just about to rehearse a love scene. Bellucci looked "catatonic" according to Mendes and this is why she was indeed perfect for the part.

Her glamour and class was captivating that one fine morning that age didn't bother the director at all for her to do the job. Most Bond girls are in their 20s or early 30s, which is why Bellucci is one of a kind.
