Parenting 101: Sing To Your Babies To Keep Them Calm

Getting married is a happy thought but having a family of your own makes you the happiest person in the world. However, as they say, it is never easy to be a parent, more so, a responsible one. It takes lots of skills and "experiences" to be able to carry out your duties without shortchanging your family's needs and desires.

For one, soothing a child can be a challenge especially to busy moms like you. But since you feel more pain whenever your little one feels distress, you are willing to do everything to keep him or her calm.

According to Medical News Today, a research has been recently published in the journal "Infancy" - emphasizing the importance of having the babies listen to music. This enables them to stay calm for a "significantly longer" period of time than when they only listen to speech.

Many previous studies have already come across as to how singing and speech affect infants' attention. Hence, this research suggests that it is the rhythm of songs that appeal to infants rather than words as they are 'entrained' by music as well as how this affects a baby's emotional and physical self-control.

Research co-author Professor Isabelle Peretz, of the Center for Research on Brain, Music and Language at the University of Montreal in Canada, said that infants need prompt parental comforting interventions whenever they feel distress.

"At-risk parents within the purview of social service agencies could be encouraged to play vocal music to infants and, better still, to sing to them," she added.

Performed two experiments involving 30 healthy infants aged 6-9 months, the researchers highlighted the intrinsic importance of nursery rhymes, which appeal to such desire for simplicity, and repetition. Therefore, the team encourages the parents especially the mothers to maximize the emotional benefits of singing among their infants.

So, the next time your baby cries to show feelings of discomfort and anxiety, start singing and you'll be surprised as to how effective it could ever be.
