27 Dead in Bucharest Club Fire

Friday, October 30th - It was a tragic night to remember for hundreds of young people. These teenagers were enjoying a free concert of Goodbye to Gravity, a metal band, at the Colectiv nightclub in Bucharest.

According to USA Today, a fire occurred at the basement of the club leaving 27 dead and 180 injured people. Next day, at least 146 people were still in the hospital mostly with severe injuries. With this situation, local authorities are worried that the number of fatalities might increase.

The lethal fire started when a spark on stage ignited flames on some polystyrene décor at the club which was formerly a factory. While on stage, the soloist of the band made a joke about the fire. The concert goers thought it was part of the band's act. Never would they know that it would be the cause of a horrendous night.

Emergency situations official Raed Arafat said that 17 of those who died were still unidentified. Witnesses told Antena 3 TV that there were 300 to 400 young people in the club. They also shared that the club had only one exit.

Florentina Dinca, 38, who lives opposite the nightclub, told the Associated Press, "They were very frightened, they screamed, ambulances didn't know what to do, girls had their hair burned, they had burns on their faces. It was terror. "

Most of the injured were rushed and confined in Floreasca Emergency Hospital. The hospital's spokeman said that it was the worst bloodshed since the 1989 anti-Communist revolution.

Government officials and investigators are doing methods and looking for more information. A government meeting will be held today and an announcement will be made about having three days of mourning.
