Robert Downey Jr. Asks Matthew Broderick If He Can Catch Up With Ex-Girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker

While maybe Robert Downey Jr. and Matthew Broderick don't know each other all that well, the Iron Man star certainly knows his ex, Sarah Jessica Parker: they dated for seven years in the 80s, until she broke it off because of Downey's drug and alcohol abuse in 1991. In a recent interview, Robert Downey Jr.'s Matthew Broderick thoughts were explained clearly: he's aware that to catch up with old love Parker he'd have to ask for her husband's permission first.

Robert Downey Jr. and Matthew Broderick have one thing in common: Sarah Jessica Parker. The Sex and the City star had a long-term relationship with Downey way back in the day, after the two now-famous actors met on the set of the film Firstborn in 1984. Parker broke up with Downey in 1991, standing back from his self-abusive habits at the time, like a well-publicized drug addiction that lasted until the early 2000s.

Now, over 20 years have passed and both actors are among the biggest names in Hollywood: nowadays, they're both Golden Globe winners, Downey has been nominated twice to the Academy Awards, Parker has two Emmys in her shelves - and, above all, they're both happily married with children; Downey is even expecting a daughter with wife Susan. However, being a gentleman about it, Robert Downey Jr.'s Matthew Broderick comments implied only that he wouldn't go up to talk to his ex without her husband's permission.

The comments came during an interview at The Howard Stern Show, where the radio host jokingly put him on the spot - as he's famous for doing with all his guests. The King of All Media asked Downey if he keeps in touch with the actress most famous for playing Carrie Broadshaw, and the actor smoothly answered that he'd have to check with her husband Broderick if it's okay to approach ... of course, Howard Stern's awkward teasing didn't stop there, also asking if Downey had ever had "salacious thoughts" about Parker, as the New York Daily puts it.

Robert Downey Jr.'s Matthew Broderick permission might not be at the top of the Tropic Thunder star's thoughts right now, as he's currently promoting new film The Judge.
