California Greek Chain Opa! Goes Bankrupt, Citing $100K–$500K in Liabilities

Opa! Authentic Greek Cuisine, a once-popular restaurant chain known for dishes like gyro fries and falafel bites, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and is shutting down all of its remaining California locations.

The company filed its bankruptcy petition on Friday, September 19, in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.

The documents show that Opa! Signature Foods, along with OPA Management Group, CEO Molly Adams, and her husband Marcus Adams, are listed as co-debtors.

In the filing, the business reported between $100,000 and $500,000 in liabilities and the same range in assets. It also listed between one and 49 creditors, Yahoo reported.

The Chapter 7 filing means Opa! plans to liquidate its assets to pay off its debts.

CEO Molly Adams wrote in the filing that the decision was made after discussions with legal and financial advisors.

"It is desirable and in the best interests of the company, its creditors, and other parties in interest," Adams stated, "that a petition be filed under Chapter 7."

The closures affect multiple Opa! locations across the Bay Area. As of September 24, these restaurants are listed as closed on Yelp and Google:

Opa! opened its first location in San Jose in 2008, eventually growing to several more cities. According to USA Today, the chain was known for its casual Greek-style menu, including Greek nachos and seafood platters.

Molly Adams joined the company around 2010 or 2011 and later launched the Hero Adams Restaurant Group in 2015, which also includes Willard Hicks, Mo's The Breakfast + Burger Joint, and Tac-oh!

News of the closures sparked emotional responses from longtime customers on social media. One user remembered enjoying "bottomless mimosas," while another said, "The food went downhill, but I'll miss the place."

Another user shared a memory: "I miss when they were on the corner of Lincoln and Minnesota. First date with my partner."
