The Mindy Project Canceled: Fox Scrapes Mindy Kaling Show, Will Hulu Pick It Up?

Even though it has gathered a steady and loyal fanbase in its three season run, it seems like the ratings weren't strong enough for the show created by and starring Mindy Kaling, as it has come out that "The Mindy Project" was canceled by Fox - though there may still be hope.

Since her run in "The Office," Kaling has become something of an iconic figure in television, and her fans from the first show quickly switched to her new Fox endeavor when it first started in 2012; but now that "The Mindy Project" is canceled, it's unclear what the future holds for the 35 year-old star.

According to Entertainment Weekly, "The Mindy Project" canceled news came last Wednesday, when Fox announced that, due to poor ratings, they would stop airing the show and not renewing it for a fourth season, leaving fans of the cult romantic comedy absolutely devastated.

However, TV Line reports (after having predicted "The Mindy Project" canceled news way back in the fall) that it seems like the company who owns the show, Universal TV, is currently in talks with Fox partner Hulu to expand the show for at least two more seasons on the streaming site, only days after buying the streaming rights to classic sitcom "Seinfeld" for an undisclosed amount well above the hundred million dollars.

Deadline reports that, months before Fox saw "The Mindy Project" canceled, there had been rumors of Hulu taking up the show for a further two seasons; the possibility started becoming more likely in January, when the Tina Fey and Robert Carlock show "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" went from its NBC plans to becoming the first Netflix sitcom, as the streaming giant picked it up for a two-season contract.

It makes much more sense that Kaling's show ends up in Hulu, as the company already owns the streaming rights due to previous contracts with Universal TV.

So, despite the fact that Fox saw "The Mindy Project" canceled, it could come back in a different model - probably even in the binge watching-friendly format!
