'Plastic Salt': We May Be Eating Three Plastics A Day

The danger of pollution in our environment is so destructive that not only is it affecting human and animals alike, it is now even affecting food.

Earth is made up of 75 percent water and in these waters the human population takes food sources such as fishes, squids, crabs and many more edible crustaceans. It is no secret that numerous ocean lifeforms are being heavily affected by the water pollution the world is suffering lately.

But what's most disturbing is the fact that even salt is now being affected by water pollution.

In a study conducted by researchers from East China Normal University they have found out that the table salt used in household have micro-sized particles of water bottle plastic, cellophane, and other plastic materials.

The researchers tested 15 different brands of salt and they have concluded that most of the salts used today have plastic in them.

Although the plastics are so small that they cannot be seen by the naked eye, some were big enough to be detected.

The study, which is published in the Environmental Science and Technology Journal, also stated that the highest plastic contaminated salts come from the sea, with up to 1,200 pieces found per pound of salt.

Next body of water with the highest contaminated salt particles is lake salts, which had 800 particles. The least amount of particles in a salt source is rock salts from wells, which only had 450 pieces of plastic.

Researchers also were able to conclude that if a person was to stick to the recommended daily intake of salt, he/she is likely to have eaten three plastic a day.

The study was conducted on Chinese salt but the lead researcher believes that plastic has become such a wide reason for contamination that it does not matter whether researchers look into Chinese or American salts.
