Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an important phase in a woman's life. Procreation is an integral part of the continuity of the human race.

Recently, researchers from the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine have shared some amazing news.

High-flavonol chocolate

The researchers have pointed out that high flavonol chocolates during pregnancy improve placental function. It also decreases the risk of preeclampsia, which can lead to preterm birth. The preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure and kidney damage.

The study participants included 129 pregnant women between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation. They were given a total of 30 grams of chocolate daily for about 12 weeks. They were monitored until delivery.

The results proved amazing. There was a marked improvement in the blood velocity of the uterine, placental and fetal circulations.

Earlier studies indicate the theobromine present in dark chocolate greatly reduced the risk of preeclampsia.

According to the researchers chocolates, especially those with high flavonol content could have a positive impact on the fetal growth and development.

Flavonols

Flavonols are active antioxidants which are naturally produced by plants. Dark chocolate contains high amounts of cocoa solids and has flavonols in high concentrations.

Dark chocolate in the US contains at least 35% of cocoa solids. European fine dark chocolate contains 43% of cocoa solids. Naturally the flavonol content will be more in them.

Health Benefits

The dark chocolate contains theobromine which helps to relax your muscles and dilate the blood vessels. This results in increased blood flow which is highly beneficial for the fetus.

It contains oleic acid which is a monounsaturated fat. Oleic acid prevents clumping together of blood cells and avoids platelet aggregation. Thus, it improves heart health.

Pregnant women who relish chocolates that are low in fat and sugar are able to manage weight gain. Unwanted weight gain can pose a serious health concern for the mother and baby.

Chocolate increases the serotonin levels in the brain. It is the happy hormone which reduces stress and depression. Thus, chocolate increases the happiness quotient and promotes the health of the mother and baby.
